The Machame Route, often referred to as the "Whiskey Route," is one of the most scenic and popular paths to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Over 6 days, you'll trek through distinct ecological zones — from rainforest to alpine desert to arctic summit — culminating in a sunrise ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters.
Drive from Moshi/Arusha to Machame Gate (1,800m). Begin your hike through lush rainforest, ascending gradually to Machame Camp at 3,000 meters. Expect a 5–7 hour trek. Overnight at Machame Camp.
Hike through moorland and heather landscapes, enjoying views of Kibo Peak. The trail leads to Shira Camp (3,840m) with a 4–6 hour trek. Overnight at Shira Camp.
Ascend to Lava Tower (4,630m) for acclimatization, then descend to Barranco Camp (3,950m). This hike helps with altitude adjustment and takes around 6–8 hours. Overnight at Barranco Camp.
Climb the famous Barranco Wall and continue over ridges and valleys toward Barafu Camp (4,673m). The hike lasts 7–9 hours. Prepare for the midnight summit push. Overnight at Barafu Camp.
Start around midnight, trekking to Stella Point (5,739m) and onwards to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the summit of Kilimanjaro. After sunrise photos, descend to Mweka Camp (3,100m). This long, challenging day lasts 12–15 hours. Overnight at Mweka Camp.
After breakfast, continue descending through the rainforest to Mweka Gate (1,640m), where you’ll receive your summit certificates. Drive back to Moshi/Arusha. Trek time: 3–4 hours.
