Itinerary – 5 Days Marangu Route

Day 1 – Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Arrive at Marangu Gate (1,860m) for registration before starting your climb. Hike through the lush rainforest zone, home to monkeys, birds, and vibrant plant life. After 3–4 hours of trekking, arrive at Mandara Hut (2,700m) for your first overnight stay. Enjoy a hearty dinner and prepare for the next day’s trek.

Day 2 – Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

Depart Mandara Hut and continue your journey through the forest to the moorland zone. The trek takes around 5–6 hours, with a steady ascent. Upon reaching Horombo Hut (3,720m), you’ll enjoy spectacular views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. This is a great spot for acclimatization, and the hut offers comfort for a good night’s rest.

Day 3 – Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

A relatively short day with a 4–5 hour trek to Kibo Hut (4,703m). As you ascend, the terrain changes, becoming more arid and rocky. Kibo Hut sits at the base of the summit cone, and climbers often rest here to prepare for the final ascent. After arriving, enjoy an early dinner and rest in anticipation of the summit day.

Day 4 – Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak and Descend to Horombo Hut

A challenging early morning ascent begins around midnight. Ascend to the summit, Uhuru Peak (5,895m), via the steep and demanding switchbacks of the Gilman’s Point. From Gilman’s Point, it’s a few more hours to the summit, passing by the glaciers and ice fields. After summiting, take photos and soak in the views, then descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest. In the afternoon, continue descending to Horombo Hut (3,720m) for a well-deserved rest.

Day 5 – Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

After breakfast, begin your descent back to Marangu Gate (1,860m) through the rainforest. The 5–6 hour descent will be much easier on the legs. Once at the gate, you’ll receive your summit certificate, celebrating your achievement. Then, you’ll be driven back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.

"The Marangu Route offers a straightforward climb with a classic experience, making it a perfect option for those with limited time but a strong desire to conquer Kilimanjaro."
