The Umbwe Route is one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic and challenging paths, starting from the southern side. Steep trails reward climbers with breathtaking views, excellent acclimatization, and a sense of adventure with fewer crowds. Trek through rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and reach the summit via Kibo Peak.
Arrive in Arusha, drive to Umbwe Gate. Meet your guides and porters, complete gear checks, and attend the briefing. Begin trek through dense rainforest, spotting monkeys and birds. Overnight at Umbwe Camp to begin acclimatization.
Steep ascent through rainforest into moorland. Cross Umbwe Valley with stunning views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Excellent acclimatization while trekking to Barranco Camp below Barranco Wall.
Morning climb of the famous Barranco Wall. Continue trekking across Karanga Valley with expansive views of the alpine desert. Overnight at Karanga Camp, perfect for acclimatization and sunset photography.
Optional acclimatization hike to nearby ridges or glacier views. Rest at Karanga Camp to strengthen your body for summit day. Enjoy panoramic views, short exploration, and guidance from your expert guides.
Trek through alpine desert to Barafu Camp, base for midnight summit attempt. Optional short hikes to adjust to altitude. Prepare warm clothing and rest early to maximize energy for summit day.
Begin summit attempt around midnight. Trek through scree slopes to Stella Point for sunrise, then continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Celebrate atop Africa’s highest point and descend to Mweka Camp for overnight rest.
Final descent through rainforest to Mweka Gate. Complete trek, celebrate success with guides and porters. Drive back to Arusha or Moshi for onward travel.
